Christmas in Cardiff 2026: Markets, Lights and Where to Stay
Cardiff does Christmas at a comfortable scale. The castle, the civic lawns and the old shopping streets sit close together, so a weekend in the capital can take in a craft market, an ice rink and a light trail largely on foot. In 2026 the season opens on Thursday 12 November, when the city's Christmas lights are switched on and three of the main attractions open on the same day.
Here is the Guesture team's guide to what's on and how to time a stay around it. Every date comes from the organisers' or Visit Cardiff's published 2026 listings; hours can change, so check the official pages before you travel.

Cardiff Christmas Market
The city's long-running craft market returns to St John Street, Working Street, Trinity Street and Hills Street, with wooden chalets of handmade gifts alongside seasonal food and drink. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 17:00 on Sundays, with late opening until 19:00 every Thursday in December, a pleasant time to browse once the lights are on.
A Victorian weekend on Queen Street
New for 2026, Queen Street becomes a Victorian Christmas market for four days only, from Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 November, open 10:00 to 19:00, with independent traders, handmade gifts, food and live entertainment.
Cardiff's Winter Wonderland
Winter Wonderland is split across two city-centre sites. Cardiff Castle's grounds hold the undercover ice rink and Ice Walk, Bavarian curling (new this year) and the Tafarn bar; City Hall Lawn has the Giant Wheel, a family fairground and the Sur La Piste ski-lodge bar. Entry is free and rides are paid for as you go, but ice-skating sessions are booked online in advance. Opening times for 2026 hadn't been published at the time of writing; Visit Cardiff's Winter Wonderland page will carry them.
Christmas at Bute Park
From Thursday 19 November to Thursday 31 December, Coopers Field in Bute Park hosts what is billed as Wales's largest light trail. This year's ‘Spirit of Christmas’ route runs through four themed areas, Joy, Hope, Wonder and Magic, including new work from emerging Welsh artists. Street-food traders and the Bute Park Tavern, a heated Alpine-style cabin, are on hand for a warm drink. Entry starts from 16:15, closing times vary, and tickets are sold through the official Christmas at Bute Park website.
An evening at the theatre
The New Theatre's pantomime this year is Beauty and the Beast, from Saturday 5 December to Sunday 3 January. In Cardiff Bay, the Royal Shakespeare Company's Matilda The Musical plays the Donald Gordon Theatre at Wales Millennium Centre from Wednesday 9 December to Sunday 17 January (age guidance 6+). Book your seats first, then plan the rest of the trip around them.
Choosing your dates
For the opening buzz, aim for 12 to 15 November, when the lights, both markets and Winter Wonderland all begin. From late November to 23 December the craft market, Winter Wonderland and the light trail all run together, with the pantomime from 5 December and Matilda from 9 December. Between Christmas and New Year the craft market has closed, but Winter Wonderland reopens after Boxing Day, the light trail runs to 31 December and both shows are still in their runs. No official city-centre fireworks had been announced for New Year's Eve 2026 at the time of writing, so book a restaurant or bar table early if you're staying for it.
Where to stay: Pontcanna
Pontcanna is a walk from the city centre through Bute Park or along the Taff, which puts the castle, the markets and Winter Wonderland within reach on foot. Its tree-lined streets, independent cafés and restaurants make a calm base after a busy day in town. These three homes are personally managed by Guesture and prepared to hotel-level standards.

The Pontcanna Emerald has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and sleeps four, with free parking: practical if you're driving in for the markets.

The Pontcanna Pearl has three bedrooms and one bathroom and sleeps five, with room for a family or friends sharing a festive weekend.

The Pontcanna Sapphire has two bedrooms and sleeps four, suiting two couples or a small family.
Booking direct on our website is usually cheaper than booking through the platforms, and we take care of the detail so your time goes on the city.
Dates and times are taken from official 2026 listings as of October 2026 and may change. Please confirm with each organiser before you travel.
